Safety Valve, Relief Header, and Flare Specification for Propane Refrigeration Systems
Process Engineering International, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted to perform sizing services for various safety relief devices and associated flare systems for two propane refrigeration trains that were designed by a Canadian EPC company for installation in Nigeria. As a part of this project the following tasks were accomplished:
-
Performed sizing calculations and provided documentation for approximately 78 pressure safety valves (PSVs)
-
Performed hydraulic calculations to adequately size inlet and outlet piping for the new PSVs
-
Developed process level specification sheets for the new PSV devices
-
Calculated blowdown volumes and performed sizing calculations for the restriction orifices for 10 emergency blowdown valves
-
Developed sizing calculations for 16 flare system sub-headers
-
Performed sizing calculations for the main flare header
-
Developed sizing calculations and process level specification sheets for knockout drums and pumps associated with the flare system
-
Verified radiation calculations for the flare
-
Developed process level specifications and developed process engineering specification sheets for the flare.
PROCESS utilized its licensed commercial simulation software’s hydraulics package and chemical/physical component database, along with its proprietary in-house relief device capacity computer program with calculations based on the guidelines in American Petroleum Institute (API) Standards 520 and 521, to determine the pressure relief requirements for this application. In-house software was also used to verify radiation calculations for the flare.
PROCESS supplied the client with the equipment sizing calculations, process level equipment datasheets, radiation calculations, pressure relief device (PRD) sizing documentation packages that included safety device calculations, and relief valve equipment datasheets that could be used to obtain quotes from vendors. PROCESS also suggested specific relief devices represented in vendor literature.
